Abstraction 12

Description

Abstraction #12 is one of the first of many to come. I believe I've found my niche in photography. While I enjoy architectural photography, I much prefer shooting and printing these photos. They combine my interest in music, motion, and American Abstract Expressionists.

My colleagues often ask about my process, so I'll explain it here (though it sounds silly to me):
I search out a location with plenty of clustered lights; stadium, parking lots, florescent grids, etc.
Judging from the type of environment, I determine the appropriate distance from the light source and the music I'll listen to while photographing.
Focus and meter reading on the lights.
Now the silly part, I dance. I grab the camera and dance it in front of the light for as long as I feel is necessary; two seconds or two minutes also depending on the environment.
After the shoot, I develop the film and print with contrast control techniques on warm tone gelatin silver paper.

I'm not sure why but everyone I explain that to wants to either photograph or videotape my shoots. I'm a little nervous about complying because I don't want the art to become performance. I don't want it to become a record of anything either. I prefer it remain fine art photography. I want the viewer to appreciate it as beauty and allow it to speak for itself. Now, I'm second guessing whether I should submit all this writing.

This photograph is actually a 4x5 paper negative using the warm tone gelatin silver paper in place of a negative. It is mounted on white museum board.

dude, this shot and artist's comment made my day!
I was always wondering how you did your abstract shots, but I thought that it would be impolite to ask and that you would explain it by yourself if you feel a need to do so. I agree with these guys who suggested that it would be interesting to film the process but I understand and respect your reasons.
That's really awesome and knowing how you did this makes these shots even more interesting for me. When I look at these shots now, I sense like I am touching something very intimate and pure, something that I cannot fully apprehend because it is so different from what happened in reality, while still - photography. That's just totally awesome!
